ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

This class will give you a basic intro to investigating an accident in the workplace.  Attendees will participate in an accident investigation that will help give them develop their own accident investigation technique.

The word “Accountability” can have several meanings.  In many instances, most workers might view it as more negative than positive.  In this session, we will explore the true meaning of accountability and how it is used in the world of safety as it applies to workers, supervisors, and managers. 
 
ACTIVE SHOOTER DEFENSE

Participants in this class will be able to develop individual plans for responding to and surviving an active shooter situation. Patrick will share his research and experience as Air Force A-10 attack pilot. He uses his insight of preparedness through better understanding of the “Active Shooter Phenomenon” and alleviating fear that goes along with uncertainty of “what can I do?”
 
ACTIVE SHOOTER RESPONSE

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. In this interactive class, you will learn things to increase your survivability during that gap between when violence begins, and law enforcement arrives. Topics include gun-disarms, barricading techniques, dealing with knife attacks, ambush techniques, working as a team, stop the bleeding, understanding cover vs concealment, disaster response psychology, combat breathing, developing a survivor’s mindset, and other critical tactics, techniques and strategies to save lives. 
 
AG/ATV SAFETY

Making safety a priority on the farm and ranch can save both lives and resources by preventing accidents, injuries and lost time. According to the latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every day, 243 agricultural workers suffer lost-work-time injury. Five percent of these injuries result in permanent impairment. This class will teach agricultural workers how to keep an eye out for potential hazards to avoid injury. Because ATV’s are now an essential tool on the farm/ranch, this class will also cover the basic rules of ATV riding, including wearing a helmet, gloves, and protective footwear.  It will also cover using a machine that is age appropriate and why having more than one rider on one machine is dangerous.
 
CONFRONTING & COACHING THE PROBLEM EMPLOYEE

When performance problems and inappropriate behavior are ignored, they do not go away. They turn into bigger problems—for you and your organization. You will learn to identify performance problems and various types of behavior problems, and you will learn to confront them in a positive and productive way. Conflict, strife, and opposing points of view are part of the workplace and part of life; you can’t change that. However, you can change the way you react and manage conflict when it does occur.
Participants will be exposed to ideas of how to resolve conflict for positive outcomes.  The coaching process will be discussed as a method to get employees back on track if behavior or performance issues are surfacing on a consistent basis.  Finally, this session will explore the path needed if the employee is not able to correct deficiencies during the coaching process.
 
CONFINED SPACE

This class enables participants to control safety and health hazards associated with permit required confined space entry.  Technical topics include recognition of confined space hazards, basic information about instrumentation used to evaluate atmospheric hazards, and general permit space ventilation techniques.  The class features workshops on confined space classification permits and program evaluation.
 
DEFENSIVE DRIVING
Montana Department of Administration, Risk Management & Tort Division

This 4-hour National Safety Council course educates drivers about common risks associated with driving. The course includes learning modules to help drivers understand their driving environment and avoid the most common causes of crashes. The course also emphasizes preparation for the driving experience and ways to be more aware and defensive in 
daily driving. The class is entertaining and contains valuable information for all participants. It uses slides, videos, and instructor comments to convey information. The 36-page course workbook is yours to take home and share with others.
 
DEMOLITION PLANNING

When demolishing a structure, or part of a structure, OSHA Subpart T requires an Engineering Survey be completed by a Competent Person prior to commencement of work.  This class will cover the necessary pre-work and planning to ensure compliance with OSHA and other entity requirements.  The following topics will be covered; Pre-Start and Engineering Surveys, Safety & Environmental considerations, Utility Locates/Disconnects, Permitting/Notifications and developing a Demolition Plan.  Attendees will also receive a sample Demolition Policy and Engineering Survey examples.
 
DIFFUSING ANGER IN THE WORKPLACE

This class focuses on recognizing a medical emergency, making the decision to help, identifying hazards, ensuring personal safety, and activating the EMS system. Additional topics include initial assessment, establishing and maintaining an open airway, rescue breathing, chest compressions, treating for shock, control of bleeding, use and operations of automatic external defibrillators, and related first aid.  Note: if you are late to class you may lose your spot to someone on the waitlist.

HAZWOPER – 40-hour OSHA 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training applies to workers who are involved in cleanup operations, voluntary clean-up operations, emergency response operations, storage, disposal, or treatment of hazardous substances, or uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. Some topics covered include hazard communication, toxicology, chemical and physical properties, toxicology, hazard classes, site characterization, air monitoring, general safety hazards, site hazards, and hands-on training with PPE. 
 
HAZWOPER 8-HOUR REFRESHER

This class meets OSHA requirements for 8 hours of annual refresher training and targets workers who remove hazardous waste or who are exposed to hazardous substances or health hazards. Topics include HAZWOPER regulations, safety hazards, air monitoring, medical surveillance, site control, decontamination, and respiratory equipment. This is for those who have completed the 40-hour or 24-hour HAZWOPER training.

Hydrogen Sulfide Certification is designed as a safety awareness program to familiarize students with the dangers associated with working in an H2S environment. The class is appropriate for entry-level through supervisory level employees.  This class meets the ANSI/ASSE Z390.1-2006 (R2010) Accepted Practices for Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Training Programs standard.
 
The course should be taken by employees needing to meet the requirements of OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.1200 which specifies mandatory requirements for the training of personnel working with or around hazardous chemicals.  It is also highly recommended and/or required for all employees who have the potential to be exposed to H2S or need their annual refresher training.

JOB SAFETY AWARENESS

What is a JSA?  A Job Safety Analysis is a way to identify and mitigate hazards in your workplace.  A JSA, when done properly, can help you to recognize hazards that may be overlooked if a job or work task is rushed into.  
 
The JSA involves all workers involved in the task, as well as their supervisor, so that everyone is on the same page, knows what to expect of the job at hand and how to eliminate, avoid or protect themselves from task hazards. Every worker has input into the JSA making it meaningful and helpful. JSA's are quickly becoming a mandatory part of many work places.
 
MACHINE GUARDING

This class covers the safeguards that protect workers from crushed fingers or hands, amputations, burns, or blindness from moving machine parts. When the operation of a machine or accidental contact injure the operator or others in the vicinity, the hazards must be eliminated or controlled.
 
MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental illness, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common support. This 8-hour course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect persons to the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The program also teaches the common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illness, like anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and schizophrenia.
Mental Health First Aid is included on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).
COURSE DETAILS:

• Listen nonjudgmentally
• Give reassurance and information
• Encourage appropriate professional help
• Encourages self-help and other support strategies
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
• Must attend full 8-hour course.

MONTANA SAFETY CULTURE ACT: ACCIDENT INVESTIGATIONS & SAFETY COMMITTEES

This session will highlight the reporting, investigating, and taking corrective action on all work-related incidents as well as safety committee requirements of the Montana Safety Culture Act for the public sector. This class will cover different topics and ideas for the required documentation to fulfill these elements. Additionally, attendees will participate in an accident investigation that will give them an idea on how to report, investigate, and take corrective actions of work related incidents.  
 
MONTANA SAFETY CULTURE ACT: NEW EMPLOYEE ORIENTATION & ANNUAL REFRESHER TRAINING

This class details these three elements required under the Montana Safety Culture Act. Safety Compliance Specialists from the Montana Department of Labor and Industry will explain numerous options and ideas for completing the required trainings to fulfill the requirements of these elements. Additionally, the instructors will cover the employer documentation requirements. 
 
MONTANA SAFETY CULTURE ACT: RECORD KEEPING & REPORTING
Montana Department of Labor & Industry Safety & Health Bureau

This session will highlight the recordkeeping and reporting requirements of the Montana Safety Culture Act with emphasis towards public sector employers. This will include when to record and report work related injuries and illnesses and how to complete the required forms.
 
MSHA BLUE CARD TRAIING

The purpose of this course is to fulfill the requirement to become an MSHA approved (blue card) instructor. You must satisfactorily demonstrate that you have the knowledge and ability to teach. Candidates for MSHA approved instructor must have relevant mining experience and/or education related to the mining industry. At the end of the course students will be able to distinguish the difference between regulations pertaining to Part 46 & Part 48, navigate and use the 30 CFR, and discuss training plan requirements according to the 30 CFR. Students will also be able to identify and discuss the 5 elements of Part 48 training programs as well as complete 5000-23 forms to properly record training when given various scenarios. As part of this course, each student will be required to develop and present no more than two 5-minute safety presentations and one final 15-minute presentation.
 
It is recommended that each student bring a detailed resume along with copies of his or hers 5000-23 training certificates for the last few years. These documents are required to be submitted to the district office along with a formal application that MSHA will provide.
 
There is no prerequisite to take this class. Class size will be limited to 12 people. The district manager will have final approval for MSHA instructors. Your application will be reviewed by the Educational Field Services Specialist and forwarded to the district manager. 
 
MY STORY OF LIVING & DYING WITH SILICOSIS

Participants will learn the general overall physical properties of silica and what it does to the lungs.  The instructor will share her personal story of her father passing from silicosis.  She will talk about her experience with his illness and his passing, as well as what she learned after he passed.

OSHA 10-HOUR: GENERAL INDUSTRY

This training is designed to educate every worker on hazard recognition and avoidance. Topics include personal protective equipment, flammable and combustible liquids, machine guarding, preventing slips, trips and falls, and more. Also includes an introduction to OSHA’s industry standards and requirements of the more frequently referenced and cited standards. Students receive an OSHA 10-hour card upon completion.
 
OSHA 30-HOUR: CONSTRUCTION 
Berke Brown, Montana Department of Labor & Industry Safety & Health Bureau
Monday – Thursday 8am – 5pm Little Missouri
This class teaches safety awareness and hazard avoidance to those responsible for workplace safety: workers, Foremen and supervisors. It includes 30 hours of training that apply toward the 30-hour Construction Industry class completion card. The class is comprised of 25 sections each one or two-hours in length. Preventative measures for workplace accidents, use of personal protective equipment, fire protection, and hazards with working in or around excavation sites are included. In addition to certificates of attendance, OSHA 30-hour cards are issued upon completion.  
 
OSHA 30-HOUR: GENERAL INDUSTRY

OSHA 7215 SILICA IN CONSTRUCTION AND GENERAL INDUSTRY

This course covers the development and implementation of controls and strategies to prevent or mitigate silica exposures in construction, maritime, and general industries. OSHA 7405 FALL HAZARD AWARENESS FOR CONSTRUCTION

This one-day course provides information on identifying, evaluating and preventing exposures to fall hazards at construction sites. The goal of the course is to provide small business owners, trainers, supervisors and employees with information on recognizing potential fall hazards at their work sites and suggest ways to avoid, minimize, control and prevent these hazards whenever possible. The course focuses on falls to a lower level rather than falls resulting from slips and trips. Topics include identifying fall hazards, analyzing fall hazards, and preventing fall hazards, as well as OSHA resources that address fall hazards.
 
OSHA 7410 MANAGING EXCAVATION HAZARDS

In this one-day course, students will learn about the role and responsibility of the employer to assign a competent person to the excavation site and arm that person with the knowledge to perform the work properly. Topics include the understanding and application of definitions relating to OSHA's Excavation Standard (Subpart P), excavation hazards and control measures, soil analysis techniques, protective system requirements and emergency response. At the end of this course, the participant will understand the importance and duties of a competent person towards excavation work and will have the knowledge and skills that are required to perform those duties.

STOP THE BLEED: BLEEDING CONTROL (BCON) BASIC

The BCON course is designed for individuals who have little or no medical training but may be called upon to provide initial trauma care and bleeding control to a victim of a traumatic injury prior to the arrival of emergency medical services or in an austere environment.
 
The BCON course is comprised of a PowerPoint presentation and lecture by a BCON trained provider.  It also includes instruction on the use and practice of direct pressure, tourniquets and wound packing.

LARRY ALHEIM
Montana Department of Environmental Quality
Larry Alheim is the Safety Director at the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). He has been working at DEQ for over 17 years in both safety and enforcing environmental statutes.  Larry was in the U.S. Coast Guard for 22 years, retiring as a Marine Science Technician Senior Chief (E-8). He was the Environmental Response Section supervisor in New York, NY, Boston, MA, and Mobile AL supervising Incident Commanders / Federal On-Scene Coordinators and responding to major oil and hazmat releases.  As a Coast Guard Marine Inspector, he inspected Ultra Large Crude Carrier tankships, offshore oil drill rigs and various oil/chemical ships and barges.   Larry is a graduate of University of the State of New York.
 
TIM BARTH
Montana Contractor Compensation Fund
Tim Barth is the Safety Consultant for the Montana Contractor Compensation Fund who helps contractors train employees in hazard recognition, improve safety cultures and find workable solutions to workplace hazards.  Tim has worked in the heavy and highway construction industry for almost thirty years.  For the past ten years, he has focused on changing how safety is viewed and how doing work safely can not only keep employees from being injured but makes them more skilled in their work and allows them to complete work more efficiently with a high-quality outcome.  Tim has a degree in Construction Engineering Technology and is an OSHA Outreach Trainer for the Construction Industry.
 
BREEINNA BOSCH

Breeinna is a native Montanan and earned her B.S. in Occupational Safety & Health with an option in Applied Health from Montana Tech of the University of Montana.  Throughout the past years, she gained knowledge and experience while working in the construction and mining industries.  With the desire to strengthen the safety culture within the workplace and ensure that workers can return home to their families each day, Breeinna became a Compliance Specialist for the Montana Department of Labor & Industry. In her spare time, Breeinna enjoys any adventure that the breathtaking state she is proud to call home has to offer.
 
GORDON BRANNON
Montana Department of Labor & Industry Safety & Health Bureau
Gordon is a Certified Mine Safety Professional and has his surface and underground training designations from MSHA. He has his Coal Mine Foreman Papers from Colorado and Montana. He is also a certified trainer by Medic First Aid in CPR/First Aid and AED. Gordon is currently an EMT-I (Nationally and State certified).
 
While living in Colstrip, he worked on the county and private ambulance service for 29 years. Prior to joining the State of Montana, he retired from Peabody Energy Company (largest coal company in the US) with 33 years of service in management and worked in numerous positions in the coal mining field and worked and trained at all their operations thru the years.  He operated his own safety, environmental, and security consulting business for two years and had training plans with MSHA in Underground and Surface and worked at Craig, Colorado. · Also, he worked with MESCO and constructed and repaired large draglines and shovels in West Palm Beach, Florida.
 
Gordon brings both a Bachelor of Science (Environmental and Safety Management) and masters’ degree (Environmental Safety Management) to the Safety and Health Bureau and has taken many other engineering classes from other universities.
 
LISA BROOKS
Montana Department of Administration, Workers Comp Management Bureau
Lisa joined WCMB as the safety program officer in March 2016. Prior to this, she held safety positions in the UK for both national and global organizations within food manufacturing, oil and gas, logistics and the airline industry. Her experience includes accident investigation, developing safe systems of work, training, hazard identification, risk assessment, strategic development and continuous improvement. Her emphasis is on implementing and improving safety programs to create a safety culture established and maintained by all employees.
 
Berke Brown

Berke is a native Montanan. He was born in Helena and was raised in the Laurel area. Berke has worked for Stillwater Mining Company, where he learned rules and regulations.   Berke has applied his knowledge & experience to work for Mine Safety & Health Administration and the State of Montana, Safety & Health Bureau as mine trainer/inspector. Berke is currently an authorized OSHA Outreach Construction trainer for the State of Montana, Safety & Health Bureau. Berke now has 14 years of safety experience. Berke and his wife resides in Billings with their children and stepchildren.

He is the author of 8 books, 11 instructional DVDs, and numerous articles. DALLAS COX

Dallas grew up in Butte and lived to tell about it.  He went to school in Billings to be a certified welder and then worked in construction for about two years before he joined the Air Force in 1973 and worked in the Intelligence career field for 20 yrs.  Dallas retired from the Air Force in 1993 and went to work for the Child Support Enforcement Division (CSED) in
Anchorage Alaska as an Child Support Enforcement Division Investigator I, II, and III and finished his last year and a half as the Accounting Manager.  He moved back to Montana in 2001 to be closer to family and began working with the Department of Labor and Industry with the Independent Contractor Central Unit on Oct 24, 2001.  
 
KAYLA CRISCUOLO

DAVID DE FER

Dave started his career in 1974 at 16 years old working for a large engineering firm and the city of Sparks, Nevada as a civil drafter where he also learned basic land surveying. In 1979, David went into construction and worked for over 27 years as a carpenter, supervisor, and superintendent on numerous projects in California, Montana, Alaska, and Hawaii. In 2007, David accepted a position as Training Director for the Montana Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship Training Council where he taught 95% of all classes. Since 2012, he worked for the Montana Department of Labor and Industry Safety and Health Bureau as an Occupational Safety & Health Specialist and Trainer, before joining Mountain West OSHA. David is an authorized OSHA Construction and General Industry instructor.
 
LORRI DEPLAZES RN CHSP CSSBB

Lorri is currently the Associate Safety Coordinator for SCL Health/Saint James Healthcare.  She has worked in healthcare safety and prevention for the past ten years.  During the past 7 years, she developed and implemented a highly successful workplace violence prevention program, safe patient handling program and is active on all major safety initiatives for SCL Health’s System Initiatives that also include Sharp Injury Prevention and Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention.  Lorri is a Lean expert and lends this skill to all areas of hospital safety. Prior to this, Lorri worked as Risk Manager/Patient Safety, Lean Sensei and both LPN and RN in Telemetry and Critical Care.
 
DAVID EVANS

Through his education and work experience David has gained safety knowledge in a variety of different industries including construction, mining and general industry. David also has experience in the industrial hygiene field conducting many different types of exposure assessments including aerosol sampling and noise monitoring
 
DAVID FOX
Fox Safety, LLC
Dave Fox has worked for many years in the oil and gas industry. Starting in the late 70's as a laborer and welder's helper in the Little Buffalo Basin oil field near Meeteetse, WY and later as a floor hand on rigs for Viersen & Cochran Drilling and Brinkerhoff-Signal Drilling.  After a 10-year break from oil and gas, Dave started a 21-year career with Conoco, working at their refinery in Billings.  During this time Dave worked as a Boiler Operator for 15 years and a Rotating Equipment mechanic for 6 years.  Concurrently, Dave spent 13 years on the refinery's Emergency Response Team (ERT), 6 of those years as an elected Captain.  "With all the generous training I received through Conoco and ConocoPhillips, I knew I had an opportunity to pass on this knowledge and information to the next generation of workers."  
 After retiring in 2012, Dave invested in additional training for himself to gain the credentials needed to be an instructor. Dave has taken instruction through the FEMA Center for Domestic Preparedness, in Anniston, Alabama for Hazmat and courses through the Mountain West OSHA Education Center at The University of Utah, School of Medicine, giving him OSHA authorization to teach outreach OSHA 10 hour and 30-hour courses for General Industry and Construction. Next Dave took courses through the PEC program, Mandeville, Louisiana.  With the credentials he received from PEC he is certified to teach the 8-hour Basic SafeLand/SafeGulf classes, the 24-hour Core Compliance classes, H2S Clear, GHS and JSA, and Intro to Pipeline. 

 

ALYSSA FRANCIS
Billings Clinic Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine Center
Alyssa is the Program Director for Billings Clinic’s Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine Center. Within this capacity she oversees the program development, marketing efforts, and ongoing operations of a successful clinical program.  She has spent over 15 years in the healthcare field working in direct patient care in both clinical and hospital settings, health insurance sectors, and information technology as well as in the roles of a business and technical project manager.  She studied at Montana State University Billings earning a Bachelor of Science degree and then a Master of Science in Administration from the University of South Dakota focusing on organizational leadership and development.  She also teaches as a part-time instructor for Montana State University Billings for both the College of Business and for the English, Philosophy and Modern Language department.  Her passion is providing unique and innovative ways to help support rural communities obtain access to health care services. 
 
Andrew Goss RN, BSN
Andrew Goss was raised in Eastern MT has been a registered nurse since 2006 graduating from Montana State in Bozeman.  He has been with Billings Clinic Trauma since 2010 as the Injury Prevention Coordinator. In this role provides community education in jury prevention as well as trauma care education for healthcare professionals in Montana and Wyoming.  He participates in the MT State Trauma Care Committee and the Eastern Regional Trauma Advisory Committee. Andrew lives outside of Billings with his wife and three children enjoying a rural MT lifestyle.
 
NICOLE GREGERSON-HOLLENBECK
Nicole Hollenbeck is a Human Resources Professional with over 18 years of experience. 
She completed her bachelor’s in education and master’s Work in Behavior Analysis.  She has spent time working in Corrections, Education and Human Resources. 

 

During the past five years Nicole has devoted her time to providing education about mental health and suicide; spending the last 3 ½ years teaching Mental Health First Aid around Oregon and Montana.  Nicole is certified in youth, adult and Law enforcement modules and enjoys providing this interactive class and information to all those whom are willing to listen. She is passionate about education people to help make our communities better for everyone. 

 

Nicole currently resides in Lolo Montana.  

 

PATRICK HOY
PJJH Survival Perspectives
Patrick earned his Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Nebraska.  Hoy also served in the U.S. Air Force where he graduated from USAF Undergraduate Pilot Training, and the USAF Flight Safety Officer training at the University of Southern California.  After retiring from the Air Force, Hoy was a Commercial airline pilot for Vanguard Airlines, Big Sky Airlines before joining Billings Clinic.  
 
During his tenure as the Emergency Management Specialist for the Billings Clinic organization, a co-worker’s simple request for Patrick to develop a survival response to an active shooter assault on a hospital led to a multi-year research project culminating in the development of his Active Shooter Defense briefing and consultancy work. Over the last five years, Patrick has provided more than 160 training sessions for thousands of employees in healthcare, television, federal government (BLM), local government (Carbon and Yellowstone Counties), and the textile industry.

He currently is a Safety Specialist with the Montana Department of Labor and Industry Safety and Health Bureau, helping workers and businesses understand the importance of workplace safety. He earned the Associate of Risk Management and Associate of Underwriting designations from the Insurance Institute of America and is an OSHA-authorized General Industry outreach trainer. Paula holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a Human Resource focus from the University of New York, Buffalo.  She has been in the Human Resource field for over 20 years and has been an HR Generalist for most of her career.  Paula was the Wellness and Safety Coordinator for Glacier Bancorp, Inc. for 11 years providing her skills in corporate wellness, health and safety.  Paula moved to RiverStone Health to become the Organizational Trainer in 2015 where she excelled at teaching her fellow colleagues new skills.  Her current role as Occupational Health Manager involves assisting and working with her new team of 36 members to create a best in class Occupational Health Department with a multi-facetted approach to helping patients and clients with annual surveillance tracking, work comp injuries, as well as work conditioning so they can realize higher production numbers and be employers who care about their employees.  In her spare time, Paula enjoys her many volunteer positions, spending time with her children, Garrett, 13, and Dylan, 11, and husband, Ryan.

She has worked with public and private sector businesses providing indoor environmental quality evaluations, safety inspections, and safety and health training. Tiffany resides in Butte with her husband and two children and is actively involved in Ott’s Halloween Haunt, a family operated fundraiser that has been benefiting local charities for 20 years.

Billings Clinic Trauma
Lanny Orr is a Montana native. Prior to attending Nursing school, he was a Navy Hospital Corpsman serving with the Marines. Lanny has been with Billings Clinic since 2012 and has been a nurse in the Emergency Department and a flight nurse with MedFlight. Lanny is currently the Trauma Coordinator at Billings Clinic. He is heavily involved with care of trauma patients. He serves on the Eastern Regional Trauma Advisory Committee, and the State Trauma Care Committee. Lanny enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his friends and family. 
 
KEITH OUZTS
Montana Contractor’s Association
Keith is the Training and Education Director for the Montana Contractors’ Association. He travels around Montana teaching classes on everything from communications to safety, erosion control/storm water management to concrete field testing and finishing. He spent 22 years in the Marine Corps retiring in 2005. He is a Marine Corps Master Instructor, received a Trainer Certification from UNC-Wilmington, and is a Master Trainer for the National Center for Construction, Education, and Research.

Bryan is the Bureau Chief of the Montana Department of Labor and Industry Safety and Health Bureau. He came to Montana as a safety consultant for Liberty Northwest’s Helena office after working as safety director of Dome Technology in Idaho. Prior to joining the Safety and Health Bureau, Bryan was a safety consultant for Montana State Fund. He received his MS in Safety and Health from the University of Idaho in 2000 and earned the Associate of Risk Management from the Insurance Institute of America.

Bryan Peterson has been with Associated Employers since 2007 and provides member services in the areas of organizational and staff development and training.  Bryan specializes in professional and staff development to include:  leadership and management development, personality assessments, communication, conflict management, team building, performance management, discipline and termination.  
 
Bryan also provides member services in regulatory and preventative training to include drug and alcohol testing reasonable suspicion for supervisors, harassment and discrimination prevention, and workplace violence prevention.  
 
Bryan has a B.S. degree in Business Administration from North Dakota State University, and his Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification.  He is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) on the local and national level.
 
JOHN PODOLINSKY
Montana Department of Environmental Quality
John’s has been with the Department of Environmental Quality for just over 24 years.  He’s worked in the Underground Storage Tank Program, Petroleum Tank Release Compensation Board, Asbestos Control Program, Federal Superfund Program, and now the Small Business Environmental Assistance Program where he also runs the Radon Control Program.  Before coming to Montana, he worked in the Midwest as a consultant conducting environmental and industrial hygiene testing.  He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Science from St. John’s University in Minnesota.  Today he’s going to present information on radon, the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.

In addition to working for MSU Fire Services Training School, Jerry is a member of the Traffic Incident Management (TIM) Steering Committee. He is one of the leading Traffic Incident Management Instructors in Montana. 

 

Judy Raboy, NP
Billings Clinic Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine Center
Born and raised in Fairfax, VA, Judy attended John Hopkins for her Bachelor of Science in nursing.  After many years of nursing she went on to obtain her Wound, Ostomy & Continence Nurse certification from Emory University in 2001. Since that time, she has worked in both inpatient, outpatient and home health as a consulting WOCN. Judy moved to Billings MT in 2013 to become the nurse manager of the Wound, Infectious Disease and Podiatry Clinics at which time she decided to return back to school to obtain her Nurse Practitioner degree. She attended the University of North Dakota in 2014-2016 and graduated as an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner.  Due to her love of wound care, she decided to continue practicing in this field and became a part of the Billings Clinic Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center. Judy also went on to receive her CWON-Advanced Practitioner certification as well. In addition to working in the outpatient clinic she have expanded her practice to now include seeing patients via Telemedicine, providing services at Livingston Health Care through an outreach wound clinic as well as provide wound care education throughout the Montana, Wyoming and North Dakota region that Billings Clinic serves.

 

PENNY RONNING
Co-Founder Yellowstone County Area Human Trafficking Task Force
Penny’s passionate commitment to human rights, the arts, social justice, and protecting wildlife habitat throughout the world is reflected in her more than 30 years of professional and volunteer service. She has initiated and helped secure more than $20 million dollars in combined monetary, pledged, and other sponsorship acquisitions for multiple nonprofit organizations.
 
In 2013, she founded OPERATION: Billings Child, a holiday gift program for homeless youth. Through OPERATION: Billings Child, more than 3,000 wrapped gifts boxes and bags, hygiene packets, and clothing items have been distributed to homeless youth enrolled in Billings Public Schools. In 2016, Penny co-founded the Yellowstone County Area Human Trafficking Task Force, the largest human trafficking task force in the state of Montana.  In 2017, Penny was elected to a four-year term on Billings City Council. Serving a trade region of more than a half million people, Billings, MT is the largest city in the state. In her role as a Councilwoman, Penny actively leads on issues of public safety, economic development, energy conservation, and equality. 
 
Penny is a filmmaker and a photographer. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film, a Master’s degree in Business Administration and enjoyed law school.
 
TYLER SANDERS

Tyler Sanders was born and raised as a Montana kid. He attended Capital High throughout high school and went on to graduate from Montana Tech In 2018 with a B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health while also being a 4-year starter on the football team. Tyler gained his hands-on safety knowledge by interning in industrial construction as well as underground coal mining throughout his previous internship in New Mexico. Tyler enjoys all the outdoor activities that Montana has to offer such as hiking, fly fishing, hunting, and skiing.
 
DREW SHEEHY

Drew grew up in Lolo and then attended high school in Missoula, MT. He later attended the University of Montana and received a B.A. in Biology. After a few years away from school, Drew went back to school at Montana Tech and earned a M.S. in Industrial Hygiene in 2014. Drew worked as an Industrial Hygienist and Safety Engineer in the semiconductor industry for three years in Idaho, focusing on chemical safety and risk assessment. Drew returned to Montana to work in the Consultation Program with the Department of Labor and Industry as an industrial hygienist in 2018.  On the nights and weekends, Drew enjoys spending time on the rivers and in the woods; specifically rafting, camping and snowshoeing throughout Southern and Western Montana. 
 
SHANNON SHIRLEY
Billings Clinic
Shannon Shirley is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and Licensed Addictions Counselor (LAC) licensed in Montana. Shannon has more than 17-years of counseling experience.  She currently has a small private practice in addition to working full time as a Billings Clinic Employee Assistance Program Counselor assisting clients with issues related to anxiety, depression, substance abuse, job-related difficulties and career related issues, life transitions, stress management, work-life balance, individual outplacement assistance, couples and family counseling and crisis response/de-briefing.  
Shannon has a MS degree in Mental Health Counseling and Rehabilitation from Montana State University Billings and undergraduate degrees in Professional Communications and Psychology from Rocky Mountain College in Billings, MT.  
 
KIRK SMITH,
Montana State Fund
Kirk joined Montana State Fund in 2009 as a safety services specialist. He previously was a safety and health specialist with the MT Safety and Health Bureau for 13 years. His training included trenching and excavation requirements, scaffold safety, and 10-hour construction courses. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1996 after a 20-year career. He has an Associate degree in Safety from the Air Force’s Community College.
 
ROB SPERLE
Montana State Fund
Rob joined Montana State fund as a Safety Management Consultant in 2016. Rob holds a Certified Occupational Safety Specialist certification (COSS). He has worked for over 25 years in the safety and health field. He spent several years working in the Bakken Oilfield. He was employed by Williston State Collage (Train ND) where his primary responsibilities were providing safety training for employees new to the oilfield. Rob has a genuine concern for the safety and wellbeing of every employee and believes that proper motivation and training are key elements in maintaining a safe and prosperous workplace.  Rob is an Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) outreach trainer for construction and general industry, and an Instructor Development trainer for Medic First Aid and American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI).
 
EARL SUTHERLAND 
Dr. Sutherland, CP,PHD, is a Clinical Psychologist specialist in Hardin, Montana. He graduated in 1983, having over 36 years of diverse experience, especially in Clinical Psychologist. Dr. Earl Bh Sutherland also cooperates with other doctors and physicians in medical groups including Bighorn Valley Health Center, Inc.

 

JACKIE SWIESZ

As an HR Business Partner, Jackie Swiesz assists AE members by responding to hotline calls; conducting HR Needs Assessments; reviewing, developing and implementing Employee Handbooks; performing on-site HR services through AE’s HR Partnering program; conducting training; assisting members with recruiting; and, assisting members with developing wage and compensation structures. 
 
Jackie has nearly two decades of human resource experience in both the private and non-profit sectors. In her HR role, she has served as a key management person and partnered with business owners, boards of directors, and supervisors to provide leadership and collaboration from strategic planning to daily operations. She is experienced in a full range of HR functions as well as payroll and benefits, safety accreditation, and employee training. She is well acquainted with the diversity of small businesses in our area. Her HR experience ranges from wholesale distributors to electrical energy cooperatives and other non-profits in the social services and educational sectors.
 
CHRIS TACKE

Chris is a 2011 graduate of Montana Tech of the University of Montana, earning a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety and Health and a minor in Biology. After graduating from Montana Tech, Chris started his safety career as the Health and Safety Manager for the Grand Teton Lodge Company in the Grand Teton National Park. While working for the Grand Teton Lodge Company, Chris also worked for Jackson Hole Fire/EMS as a Firefighter/EMT-Basic.
 
In February of 2014, Chris and his family moved back to Montana and he started working for the Montana Department of Transportation as a Safety Consultant in the Billings and Great Falls Districts.
 
Currently, Chris is a Safety and Health Specialist with the Montana Department of Labor and Industry- Safety Bureau in the Great Falls Field office.
 
KELLIE TRUDGEON, CSP, SAFETY MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT, KALISPELL

Kellie joined State Fund in 2016. Kellie’s passion for safety started at an early age after her father’s coworker was killed on the job. She started her safety career at Montana Tech working in the Environmental Safety and Health department as the intern for two years and later going on to Copper Environmental Consulting in Anaconda where she managed safety on remediation management sites in Nevada and Colorado. Kellie holds a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety & Health and a Master of Science in Industrial Hygiene both from Montana Tech of the University of Montana. While at Montana Tech, Kellie was the president of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) student chapter. She is currently the Professional Development Coordinator for the Big Sky Chapter of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP).  Kellie focuses on risk assessment and hazard identification.  Kellie holds the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.  
 
SALLY VENARD

Sally has a MS in Psychology and is the Safety Director at Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, where she has worked for 29 years. For 12 years, she worked directly with emotionally disturbed youth, was the Director of Group homes for 6 years, and trained as an internal investigator. Sally is also a trainer for de-escalation and physical restraint.   She also works with the Billings Association of Safety and health (BASH).  
 
JASON VENN
Victory Insurance
Jason has long experience with combining safe work practices with high stress environments.   He spent twelve years as a wildland fire engine captain for the Bureau of Land Management and followed that with five years of supervisory experience with the oilfield service company Sanjel USA.  For the last two years he has been working with employers all over the state of Montana as a Safety and Loss Control Consultant for Montana’s only private workers compensation carrier Victory Insurance.  He hopes that his sole focus on safe work practices combined with his previous operational experience will bring a unique perspective to the world of safety.
 
JUDY WATKINS

Judy Watkins is an Environmental Science Specialist with the Department of 
Environmental Quality (DEQ).  She has worked with hazardous waste rules since 1989 and been with DEQ since 2011.  She is the region 8 representative on the Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Task Force within the Hazardous Waste Subcommittee of the Association of State and Territorial Sold Waste Management Officials. Currently, she covers the eastern part of Montana for DEQ visiting hazardous waste generators to ensure compliance of the management of hazardous waste and used oil rules.   
 
BOB WINSTON
Victory Insurance
Bob Winston is representing Victory Insurance Company, Montana’s only domestic Workers’ Compensation carrier.  Bob has been actively involved in the areas of safety and loss control management for the past thirty years.  
 
Bob previously served as Loss Control Manager for Valor Insurance, a private workers’ compensation insurer in Billings, and the Montana Safety Services Council, a non-profit educational association established to provide safety and health-related services.  He was the original Director for the Council and was instrumental with its initial planning and organization.  
 
Prior to the MSSC, Bob resided in Southern California where he held the position of Director of Safety and Administration for Kitchell Contractors, Inc.  During his thirteen-year tenure with Kitchell, he was responsible for managing their safety, insurance claims, and equipment purchasing, leasing and rental program.
 
Bob’s role at Victory is to serve as a safety and loss control resource for each of their clients.  In this capacity he provides a variety of safety services including training and education, program development and review, technical assistance, site hazard analysis, and accident investigation.
 
Bob has a Degree in Business Administration, as well as a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Arizona State University, and a Certificate in Occupational Safety from the University of California – Irvine.
