    OSHA 7405 FALL HAZARD AWARENESS FOR CONSTRUCTION

    This one-day course provides information on identifying, evaluating and preventing exposures to fall hazards at construction sites. The goal of the course is to provide small business owners, trainers, supervisors and employees with information on recognizing potential fall hazards at their work sites and suggest ways to avoid, minimize, control and prevent these hazards whenever possible. The course focuses on falls to a lower level rather than falls resulting from slips and trips. Topics include identifying fall hazards, analyzing fall hazards, and preventing fall hazards, as well as OSHA resources that address fall hazards.
     
    OSHA 7410 MANAGING EXCAVATION HAZARDS

    In this one-day course, students will learn about the role and responsibility of the employer to assign a competent person to the excavation site and arm that person with the knowledge to perform the work properly. Topics include the understanding and application of definitions relating to OSHA's Excavation Standard (Subpart P), excavation hazards and control measures, soil analysis techniques, protective system requirements and emergency response. At the end of this course, the participant will understand the importance and duties of a competent person towards excavation work and will have the knowledge and skills that are required to perform those duties.

    PREVENTING DISTRACTED DRIVING

    This is a 2-hour course designed to educate drivers on the risks associated with distracted driving.  It is primarily intended for drivers who have completed a general Defensive Driving class, but anyone can attend. New research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that 80-percent of all crashes involved distracted driving.  That is almost 5 million crashes per year and roughly $184 in damage caused by distracted drivers! The course discusses distractions such as electronic equipment, passengers, vehicle controls, things outside your car, and eating, reading and grooming and offers tips on how to reduce those risks.

    SUICIDE IN MONTANA

    This presentation focuses on suicide within our culture with specific attention towards Montana.  The presentation covers national and Montana data, demographics of a suicidal person, warning signs, risk assessment, training on how to intervene with a suicidal person, evidenced-based practices, and resources available.
     
    Learning objectives for this presentation include: 1) Participants will be able to identify at least three warning signs of suicide, 2) Participants will know what QPR stands for, and 3) Participants will be able to identify at least two suicide prevention resources in the state.

  • ETHAN ANDERSON

    Ethan was born and raised in Great Falls, MT. He graduated from Montana Tech of the University of Montana with a B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health in 2017. Throughout his college career, he has gained safety and health knowledge through education, surface coal mining and underground metal mining in Wyoming, North Dakota, and Michigan. He currently is a Compliance Specialists for the Department of Labor and Industry.  Ethan enjoys spending his free time with family and friends; fishing, boating, and hiking/backpacking. 

    BERKE BROWN
    Montana Department of Labor & Industry Safety & Health Bureau
    Berke is a native Montanan. He was born in Helena and was raised in the Laurel area. Berke has worked for Stillwater Mining Company, where he learned rules and regulations. Berke has applied his knowledge & experience to work for Mine Safety & Health Administration and the State of Montana, Safety & Health Bureau as mine trainer/inspector. Berke is currently an authorized OSHA Outreach Construction trainer for the State of Montana, Safety & Health Bureau. Berke now has 14 years of safety experience. Berke and his wife resides in Billings with their children and stepchildren.

    Maggie Cook-Shimanek, MD, MPH
    Maggie is Medical Director for the Montana Department of Labor and Industry. Dr. Cook-Shimanek also works with the Colorado Division of Workers’ Compensation as the Medical Treatment Guidelines Medical Director. She is board certified in both Occupational Medicine and General Preventive Medicine and completed her residency training programs at the University of Colorado. She has a Master of Public Health with a concentration in epidemiology from the Colorado School of Public Health. She is President-Elect of the Rocky Mountain Academy of Occupational & Environmental Medicine and serves as an editor of the upcoming CO's CURE Occupational and Environmental Medicine Opioid Prescribing and Treatment Guidelines. Additionally, she has been selected to serve on the Shoulder Panel for the ACOEM Clinical Practice Guidelines and sits on the External Advisory Panel for the Mountain and Plains Education and Research Center located at the Colorado School of Public Health.

    KAYLA CRISCUOLO

    Kayla was born and raised in Montana and earned her B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health from Montana Tech the University of Montana. Throughout the past years, she has gained knowledge and experience in safety and industrial hygiene through education and while working in the nuclear industry in Washington at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. 

    DARBY DECKER

    Darby was born and raised in Butte, MT. She graduated from Montana Tech with a B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health in 2019. During college she gained safety and health experience through multiple internships at Colstrip Power Plant. Darby enjoys skiing, camping, hiking, and hunting in her free time.

    DAVID EVANS

    David was born and raised in Montana and earned a M.S. in Industrial Hygiene and a B.S. in Occupation Safety and Health from Montana Tech of the University of Montana. Through his education and work experience David has gained safety knowledge in a variety of different industries including construction, mining and general industry. David also has experience in the industrial hygiene field conducting many different types of exposure assessments including aerosol sampling and noise monitoring.

    Joseph Hanson, MSW

    Joseph Hansen, is a retired U.S. Air Force Security Forces Master Sergeant with experience in Antiterrorism and Force Protection as well as various readiness functions. Joe was awarded an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Criminal Justice in 2006 and was a Certified Hostage Negotiator from 2009-2014. Joe began his second career in the mental health field after obtaining his Associates of Science in Social Services degree through the Community College of the Air Force.  Immediately after retiring from the Air Force he utilized the Post 911 GI Bill and received his Bachelor’s degree in Social Psychology from Park University. From there Joe worked as an armed Security Guard supervisor at The Montana Air National Guard Base and as a Work Study/Intern at the Montana Department of Veteran Affairs Great Falls office.  Joe continued to utilize the Post 911 GI Bill to earn a Master of Social Work degree in 2019.  Just prior to graduation he was hired by Benefis Health System as a Behavioral Health Intern and then hired immediately post-graduation as an Outpatient Behavioral Health Counselor. Joe currently acts as a liaison between Benefis Behavioral Health and Malmstrom Air Force Base Mental Health and The Great Falls Adult Addictions and Veterans Courts to coordinate services and patient treatment planning. Joe has been instrumental in transforming the Outpatient Behavioral Health Program and is noted for fostering and maintaining relationships with outside partners ensuring seamless treatment for patients. Joe facilitates a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy “Skills” group and formed the “Dark Night - Brighter Days” therapy group for soon to be Adult Treatment Court graduates. 

    Shannon Hines, LMSW

    Shannon Hines, is a retired U.S. Army Medical Service Corps Officer with experience working State and Federal Emergency Management and EOC Operations during various fire and natural disaster seasons. Mrs. Hines was previously assigned to the 102nd Civil Support Team as a Survey Team Member specializing in Nuclear, Biological & Chemical with FEMA Training. Following graduate school completion, Mrs. Hines was assigned to several mobilization platforms to screen and review behavioral health needs of returning Soldiers from various mobilization assignments during OIF/OEF with additional duties as a Sexual Assault Resource Coordinator. Following AGR Military assignment Mrs. Hines served as the Crisis Team Supervisor for Douglas County Mental Health and as a County Director’s Designee for Pre Commitment Investigations and Hearings through Civil Court.  Mrs. Hines is currently employed by Benefis Health Systems as an Outpatient Behavioral Health Counselor with additional duties in the Benefis Emergency Room as an Emergency Room Social Worker.
     
    LOGAN JACKSON
    Montana Department of Labor & Industry
    Logan has worked for the Montana Department of Labor and Industry since 2016, serving in a variety of capacities including Licensing Permit Technician and Investigator. In his current role as Compliance Education Specialist, he is working to promote education and provide the best possible service to all Montanans. In addition to his career with DLI, he has 16 years of experience in the private sector. Logan has a Bachelor’s of Science in Marketing Management. He is an avid outdoorsman, who enjoys spending as much time as possible hunting, fishing, and hiking with his wife, two sons, and three springer spaniels. He is also a musician and studies Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

    Lisa Mathess, Lead Consultant, Job Accommodation Network
    Lisa joined the motor team as a consultant February 2011. Lisa provides one-on-one guidance on workplace accommodations and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). She assists employees and employers with understanding their rights and responsibilities under the ADA and in identifying accommodation solutions for employees with motor impairments. Lisa also presents on the ADA and accommodation issues at various national conferences and provides specialized trainings to JAN audiences and advocacy groups.
    Lisa graduated from West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in Business and a Master’s of Arts in Communication Studies. 

     


    Marcus Meyer, Montana Department of justice

     

    Marcus Meyer is an investigator with the Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) at the Montana Department of Justice.  OCP maintains the State’s electronic registry for end-of-life advanced directives plus a variety of other programs to protect Montana consumers, like foreclosure assistance, ID Theft Passport, the Do Not Call List, and registrations for telemarketers.  
     
    As an investigator, Marcus educates consumers about deceptive business practices and investigates/mediates complaints from consumers against businesses.
     
    In 2017, Marcus was elected to the board of directors for North American Consumer Protection Investigators.  He is a graduate of Carroll College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business management and marketing.  

     


    FRED MILLER OSHT, ARM, AU
    Montana Department of Labor & Industry Safety & Health Bureau
    Fred worked more than 12 years as a commercial insurance agent in Helena and Great Falls, specializing in workers’ compensation. He also worked seven years as a journalist in Lewistown, Havre, and Great Falls. He currently is a Safety Specialist with the Montana Department of Labor and Industry Safety and Health Bureau, helping workers and businesses understand the importance of workplace safety. He earned the Associate of Risk Management and Associate of Underwriting designations from the Insurance Institute of America and is an OSHA-authorized General Industry outreach trainer. He received his bachelor’s degree from Allegheny College.

    JOHN OLAECHEA

    John Olaechea is the Compliance Assistance Specialist for OSHA in Region VIII.  He provides outreach and information about safety and health hazards and OSHA policies and regulations to employers, trade associations, unions, the public and other organizations.  Prior to this position, John worked for eight years as an industrial hygienist and compliance officer for the Englewood Area Office of OSHA.  John also served in the United States Peace Corps and graduated from Wright State University (Ohio) with a degree in environmental health science.  

    TIFFANY OTT
    Tiffany is a Montana Tech graduate with an MS in Industrial Hygiene and a BS in Occupational Safety and Health Science and Engineering. She has worked with public and private sector businesses providing indoor environmental quality evaluations, safety inspections, and safety and health training. Tiffany resides in Butte with her husband and two children and is actively involved in Ott’s Halloween Haunt, a family operated fundraiser that has been benefiting local charities for 20 years.

    Bryan is the Bureau Chief of the Montana Department of Labor and Industry Safety and Health Bureau. He came to Montana as a safety consultant for Liberty Northwest’s Helena office after working as safety director of Dome Technology in Idaho. Prior to joining the Safety and Health Bureau, Bryan was a safety consultant for Montana State Fund. He received his MS in Safety and Health from the University of Idaho in 2000 and earned the Associate of Risk Management from the Insurance Institute of America.

    JOHN PODOLINSKY
    Montana Department of Environmental Quality
    John’s has been with the Department of Environmental Quality for just over 24 years.  He has worked in the Underground Storage Tank Program, Petroleum Tank Release Compensation Board, Asbestos Control Program, Federal Superfund Program, and now the Small Business Environmental Assistance Program where he also runs the Radon Control Program.  Prior to coming to Montana, he worked in the Midwest as a consultant conducting environmental and industrial hygiene testing.  He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Science from St. John’s University in Minnesota.  

    KARL ROSSTON
    Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services
    Karl Rosston is the Suicide Prevention Coordinator for the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services.  He provides evidenced-based programs to all Montana secondary schools, implements the State Suicide Prevention Plan, supports the Montana Suicide Prevention Lifeline, implements firearm safety programs and statewide media campaigns, provides suicide prevention trainings, and coordinates suicide prevention efforts around the state. Karl is adjunct faculty at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and a nationally certified trainer in QPR and Mental Health First Aid.  Previously, Karl was the Director of Social Services at Shodair Children’s Hospital in Helena.  Before returning to Montana, he was on the faculty of the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, and a clinical consultant with the Colorado Division of Youth Corrections.  Karl is a licensed clinical social worker who maintains a small private practice in Helena.  He received his Master’s in Social Work from the University of Denver and his Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Montana.

    TYLER SANDERS

    Tyler Sanders was born and raised as a Montana kid. He attended Capital High throughout high school and went on to graduate from Montana Tech In 2018 with a B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health while also being a 4-year starter on the football team. Tyler gained his hands-on safety knowledge by interning in industrial construction as well as underground coal mining throughout his previous internship in New Mexico. Tyler enjoys all the outdoor activities that Montana has to offer such as hiking, fly fishing, hunting, and skiing.

    DREW SHEEHY
    Montana Department of Labor & Industry Safety & Health Bureau
    Drew grew up in Lolo and then attended high school in Missoula, MT. He later attended the University of Montana and received a B.A. in Biology. After a few years away from school, Drew went back to school at Montana Tech and earned a M.S. in Industrial Hygiene in 2014. Drew worked as an Industrial Hygienist and Safety Engineer in the semiconductor industry for three years in Idaho, focusing on chemical safety and risk assessment. Drew returned to Montana to work in the Consultation Program with the Department of Labor and Industry as an industrial hygienist in 2018.  On the nights and weekends, Drew enjoys spending time on the rivers and in the woods; specifically rafting, camping and snowshoeing throughout Southern and Western Montana. 

    KIRK SMITH,
    Montana State Fund
    Kirk joined Montana State Fund in 2009 as a safety services specialist. He previously was a safety and health specialist with the MT Safety and Health Bureau for 13 years. His training included trenching and excavation requirements, scaffold safety, and 10-hour construction courses. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1996 after a 20-year career. He has an Associate degree in Safety from the Air Force’s Community College.

    ROB SPERLE
    Montana State Fund
    Rob joined Montana State fund as a Safety Management Consultant in 2016. Rob holds a Certified Occupational Safety Specialist certification (COSS). He has worked for over 25 years in the safety and health field. He spent several years working in the Bakken Oilfield. He was employed by Williston State Collage (Train ND) where his primary responsibilities were providing safety training for employees new to the oilfield. Rob has a genuine concern for the safety and wellbeing of every employee and believes that proper motivation and training are key elements in maintaining a safe and prosperous workplace.  Rob is an Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) outreach trainer for construction and general industry, and an Instructor Development trainer for Medic First Aid and American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI).

    CHRIS TACKE
    Montana Department of Labor & Industry Safety & Health Bureau
    Chris is a 2011 graduate of Montana Tech of the University of Montana, earning a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety and Health and a minor in Biology. After graduating from Montana Tech, Chris started his safety career as the Health and Safety Manager for the Grand Teton Lodge Company in the Grand Teton National Park. While working for the Grand Teton Lodge Company, Chris also worked for Jackson Hole Fire/EMS as a Firefighter/EMT-Basic.
     
    In February of 2014, Chris and his family moved back to Montana and he started working for the Montana Department of Transportation as a Safety Consultant in the Billings and Great Falls Districts.
     
    Currently, Chris is a Safety and Health Specialist with the Montana Department of Labor and Industry- Safety Bureau in the Great Falls Field office.

    JASON VENN
    Victory Insurance
    Jason has long experience with combining safe work practices with high stress environments.   He spent twelve years as a wildland fire engine captain for the Bureau of Land Management and followed that with five years of supervisory experience with the oilfield service company Sanjel USA.  For the last two years he has been working with employers all over the state of Montana as a Safety and Loss Control Consultant for Montana’s only private workers compensation carrier Victory Insurance.  He hopes that his sole focus on safe work practices combined with his previous operational experience will bring a unique perspective to the world of safety.

    BOB WINSTON
    Victory Insurance
    Bob Winston is representing Victory Insurance Company, Montana’s only domestic Workers’ Compensation carrier.  Bob has been actively involved in the areas of safety and loss control management for the past thirty years.  
     
    Bob previously served as Loss Control Manager for Valor Insurance, a private workers’ compensation insurer in Billings, and the Montana Safety Services Council, a non-profit educational association established to provide safety and health-related services.  He was the original Director for the Council and was instrumental with its initial planning and organization.  
     
    Prior to the MSSC, Bob resided in Southern California where he held the position of Director of Safety and Administration for Kitchell Contractors, Inc.  During his thirteen-year tenure with Kitchell, he was responsible for managing their safety, insurance claims, and equipment purchasing, leasing and rental program.
     
    Bob’s role at Victory is to serve as a safety and loss control resource for each of their clients.  In this capacity he provides a variety of safety services including training and education, program development and review, technical assistance, site hazard analysis, and accident investigation.
     
    Bob has a Degree in Business Administration, as well as a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Arizona State University, and a Certificate in Occupational Safety from the University of California – Irvine. 

    CINDY ZIMMERMAN

    Cindy Zimmerman is the Program Manager for the Stay at Work/Return to Work program and graduated from Montana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Marketing. She is an interactive and engaging speaker who brings enthusiasm and knowledge to her presentation, while providing employees with skills to help them become more successful in their job and life.
